Ngapali, Myanmar: Luxurious Beachside Getaways in an Unspoiled Paradise

Ngapali, Myanmar: Luxurious Beachside Getaways in an Unspoiled Paradise

Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is full of beautiful and diverse natural landscapes to enjoy. Because it has only recently been opened up to visitors, this Southeast Asian paradise is largely untouched by tourism. Traveling here, you can experience a tranquil getaway almost impossible to find elsewhere.

Although there are several pristine beaches with white sand and almost impossibly clear water to choose from, the best to pick for a pampered stay is Ngapali Beach. Not only is it easy to get to from other cities in Myanmar, it also offers the best luxury resorts that the country has to offer.

Amazing Ngapali Resort

An amazing retreat indeed, not only is this hotel located right on the most gorgeous beach in Myanmar, so are all the rooms. Actually, room is not the correct word. There are no guestrooms here… only private villas, each with its own seaside terrace and Ngapali awaiting you just paces away.

All the villas combine traditional decor with all the modern amenities. The Beach Front Suite Villa also has a sun lounge and the Amazing Suite Beach Front Villa, well worth splashing out for, is… well… amazing. It’s two stories and includes an open sea view Jacuzzi, an outdoor private shower (in addition to the one inside) and kitchen facilities for those who can’t be bothered leaving to dine in the delicious onsite restaurant.

Resort amenities include a restaurant, bar, outdoor swimming pool, billiards and volleyball. Bicycles, fishing boats and golf clubs are also available and you will be close to the local course. There’s also a spa so when you’re tired out from all that relaxation, a yummy massage awaits you. While you may not want to leave the resort (ever), shuttle bus service is available to the nearby towns.

Chasing Irrawaddy Dolphins in the Mekong River at Kratie, Cambodia

By Andrew Kolasinski

Our boat had motored out two kilometers from the dock. Now, in the intense mid-day sun we drifted through a cluster of grassy sand islands mid-stream in the Mekong.

The day began in Kratie, on the east bank of the Mekong, 350 kilometers from Phnom Penh. The previous day I rode the bus ride for almost seven hours through pepper farms and rubber plantations.

Kratie, a city of 13,000 has dozens of hotels and guesthouses, all offering tours to see the dolphins.

Kampi, fifteen kilometers north of Kratie, is the port for the dolphin viewing fleet. This riverside village is near the dolphin's feeding grounds. A dozen twenty-foot wooden, double enders are powered by long-shaft engines. Luckily they have awnings to protect against the doubly bright, river glaring sun.

Our young Khmer skipper said there are 20 dolphins, but the pod is healthy and they are now protected by law. They are found in other parts of the Mekong River with a neighboring pod of 35-50 dolphins living among the 4,000 Islands of southern Laos.

Hazy September Afternoon in the Antiguan Hills

The Trade Winds Hotel sits atop a lovely hill on the north west of Antigua overlooking the well-regarded Dickenson Bay.

It extends its high levels of service to the Bayhouse Restaurant ‘au sein’. The spacious deck has many tables with excellent views you can’t help but think there are few better places to come and eat at lunch or for one evening. Indeed the barman has served me up the best twist on a mojito I have ever had ! I have had mojitos in Havana too. It’s like English football to the cocktail world – they just invented the game !

I have to say it has been a less than clear day today a bit muggy out of season and here is a perfect place to capture the wind that blows through Antigua. I have taken the afternoon off and escaped Jolly Harbour where I stay. BUT I long to be in this part of the island. It just feels good to me and I have become to familiar down there a nomad like me – time to haul ass !

The pool is perfectly refreshing – I’m just going back in, be with you again soon.

I wish you could have been there ! A nice dip and now another mojito twisted by lady ginger – but you can feel bad for me since it is a temporary rest from the racetrack.

Heading on holiday? Beware expensive car hire!

Bags packed? Check. Flight booked and passport found? Check. Hire car sorted out? Almost… Hiring a car on holiday is an essential for many travellers. But finding a good deal on car hire can be difficult. The cost of car hire is different depending on the destination, but also depending on the package you choose. If you’re hiring a car in Florida, look forward to the cheapest costs out of all holiday destinations. But watch out if you are driving a hire car in Norway – picking up a rental from Oslo Airport was the most expensive destination for holiday car hire, according to a recent report from the Post Office.

Tips for choosing a holiday destination

Tips for choosing a holiday destination

Although the idea of strolling around a tropical island probably appeals to you, it's likely that the thought of actually planning the holiday and choosing a destination does not. With so much choice, it's not always easy to select the right place for your upcoming break. Here, we share a few tips on how to find the perfect holiday destination.

What's the purpose of the holiday?

The first thing to consider is what you want from your holiday - for some people, it's all about relaxation, in which case something like a traditional sun holiday or a yoga retreat in the Caribbean might be good options. You'll have plenty of time to rest, sunbathe and catch up on your reading and will come home feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. However, there are other people who are more interested in experiencing a completely different culture and meeting lots of new people, in which case something like a group trek around Thailand or Argentina could be the perfect choice.
