The Evolocopter - evolution of multirotor design

The Evolocopter - evolution of multirotor design

Well you may not catch me taking a ride in this just yet as I dont think for a moment that the multirotor is proven in flight as much as a helicopter but this is a fantastic stepping stone from concept to reality. Thanks to the fastcodesign guys for inspiring me to write this early in the week. Here is the full suite of images

This image found on the google group Aerial Photography and Videography [as we love this kind of good press for drones] and now the coming reality showcased already at the german air show AERO Friedrichshafen 2014 seen here..
I count around 14 motos and no doubt you can fly on fewer. So long as there is quite a bit of redundancy then this should be as safe as a helicopter both share the same principals of aeronautics.
I think personal transport systems are one of the more exciting things to come. Get me off the darn roads.

The 640d a new era for the diesel ?

The 640d a new era for the diesel ?

This is what someone more clued up has to say on the subject:

Here’s a couple of bits and pieces about the mighty BMW 640d. Seems odd to be able to refer to a diesel as ‘mighty’ but such it is and a real sign of the times. I guess it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that diesels are finally where it’s at for real-world useable performance mated to stunning economy, given that diesel cars have dominated the winners enclosure at Le Mans for the past 5 or 6 years.

"

Anyway, for the record the 640d produces 313bhp and an eye-watering 465lbs/ft of torque, giving the Uber-coupe figures of 0-60mph in 5.3 seconds and onto an electronically governed top speed of 155mph. DMS and other such companies will further enhance the power levels to 380+ bhp and 580+lbs/ft torque for a modest sum (under £1k) and remove the top speed limiter at the same time, giving performance figures of circa 4.5 0-60 and 180+ mph. Add in sensational levels of in-gear acceleration to rival most supercars and a fantastic 8 speed gearbox that works brilliantly both as a flappy paddle manual AND as a full auto (very rare to have both work this well) and the ability to cross continents with ease, returning 50+ mpg and 850 mile range between fill-ups and I think you might begin to see why this middle-aged geezer is so interested in this level of middle-aged comfort :)

BMW Showcased two models the 2 series active tourer and the 1 series 118d

BMW Showcased two models the 2 series active tourer and the 1 series 118d

I sat in the 1 series and it was really nice (thats always the feeling you get in a new car right ?) this was a magnificent blue however. More interesting perhaps was the silver active tourer model which is a front wheel drive MPV. It seems to review quite well but for me didnt look so much like a bmw anymore and the fwd will upset most bmw purists, the car isnt designed for them either and rwd upsets perhaps the target audience.

Style 2014: The New Jaguar F- Type

Style 2014: The New Jaguar F- Type

The F-type from is yet another engineering miracle from its makers. Fast, powerful, and agile could perfectly describe this wonderful machine. Equipped with supercharged engines and lightweight aluminum body, this machine can provide you with all the thrills you expect from a wonder car like this. F-type is available in both coupe as well as convertible. It comes in three models, entry level F-Type, F-Type S and F-Type R. Though all the three models are similar in design, but engine wise there is a big difference.

Interiors
It is a two seated setup. Equipped with leather interiors and its control buttons finished in aluminium. It has a touchscreen display planked with eight buttons in the centre. It provides you with full range of programs such as navigation, communication, car setup and indeed entertainment. Another display is present between the dials. Knobs and toggles are there for climate control. The interior is a perfect blend of intuitive technology with functional ergonomics. Every bit of the machine gives you the feel of a perfect sporting style. The cockpit is designed keeping in mind both traditional as well as trendy drivers.
Body
Another important feature that F-Type comes in is the very light in weight aluminium body. This lightweight body combined with super powerful engine gives you a perfect torque to weight and power to torque ratio that you expect from such a mean machine. All the three F-Type use a QuickShift ZF automatic transmission which very fast and superbly refined.
Jaguar F-Type
Entry level Jaguar F-type fills the gap between Porsche Boxster as well as Porsche 911. It gives a perfect blend of strong performance match with good driving dynamics. It has a powerful 336bhp engine and an eight –speed QuickShift gearbox. It certainly is more grown than Boxster and also more financially convenient than 911. Though termed as entry level, it doesn’t compromises on any aspect. It is surely going to attract 80 percent of its buyer from other Jaguar rivals brand.
Jaguar F-Type S V6
Next in the line is, Jaguar F-Type S V6, it is more powerful and also offers a bit more performance wise. It comes with a 375bhp engine and move from 0 to 60 in less than 5.2 sec. On performance basis, if compared to entry level it has better suspensions, chassis, breaks and steering. Even the exhaust can be heightened by Dynamic Drive system which permits the user to tweak steering feel, gear change speeds and exhaust noise, all at a press of a button.
Jaguar F-Type V8 R
Now about the F-Type V8 R, this certainly is a hell of a car. Its makers claim that it can reach top speed of 186mph and go from 0 to 100 in less than 8.8 sec. Now that is super speed. This speed match with terrific beauty in its handling makes this a perfect car for its owners. It comes with a mighty 5 litre, V8 engine that is capable of producing astonishing 489bhp. This might not out of the class numbers, but when you consider that f-type is made up of complete aluminium body, you’ll realize the supremacy of the machine.

What if???

What if???

What if…..?

I woke up this morning to find that my wife was already down stairs with my six week old son. As I lifted myself from my king size bed I thought, What if I could install the machine out of Wallace and Gromit. You all know the device I’m talking about, the machine that tilts you out of bed, showers you and brushes your teeth for you. I know this sounds lazy but just imagine how awesome this would be if you could buy something like this on the market. Or what if a large suction tube descended upon you just after you get out of bed that washes you, dry’s you and dresses you. We live in the 21st century, we can send out unmanned drones to strategically fire missiles right up the back side of anyone unfortunate enough to be on our naughty list. So why can’t I have a device that carries out the tedious tasks of personal hygiene?

Once I’ve grunted, groaned and stretched off, I wrap myself in my dressing gown and head towards the toilet, and then once again I had another crazy machination. What if, instead of wasting time on the toilet, wasting toilet paper and baby wipes, imagine there was a device that can digitally remove your bodily waste as and when requested? I mean, our bowel movements aren’t exactly a pleasant experience for all, not to mention we could save money on toilet cleaner, and air freshener. I saw an episode of Family Guy, this particular story encompassed the possibly of the multi verse theory. The theory states that there are millions of universes all parallel to each other in different dimensions. Well in this particular episode one universe is so advanced that all bowel movements can be requested at will and are digitally removed and sent to another universe. Also AIDS is a curable disease, by simply taking a pill and it is obliterated immediately, also another what if question to think about.

So after carrying out my business, I stumble across the landing and check the stairs to make sure the cats aren’t waiting to trip me down them. Then all of sudden, yep you guessed, a what if pops into my head, much like a random Frisbee when your wandering around your local park, or if you live in my area, a bottle of cheap vodka! Now this idea isn’t exactly new, nor is it a crazy nonexistent piece of tech, but I’ve always wanted to have an escalator instead of stairs. Now I would imagine this would be annoying if you haven’t got room for two sets, so you would have to change the settings to either up or down, but I am just lazy enough to try. I also thought a fun way of getting down the stairs would some kind of a zip wire or inflatable airplane escape slide.

So I get to the bottom of the stairs, walk into the living room and greet my wife who is watching television. She offers to make me a cup of tea and I accept and sit with my son who is currently asleep. I’m sat there with my son when I think to myself what if instead of having to make cups of tea, turning the television on and controlling the heating in the house, what about a universal control system, voice activated and handheld. A controller much like the new WII U’s, and an open voice activation system where you simply tell the house to carry out tasks. Kettle on! Heating on up to 28 degrees Celsius! Television, find me Sons of Anarchy! All these would be ideal pieces of tech and I’m pretty sure something similar does in fact exist today.
