There's no question about it. Skincare products to help keep your skin stay young, healthy and glowing. There's just one problem and that is everybody's making too many bold claims that science and testing do not support.
Here's what you should know
Your skin's number one enemy is the sun, apart from your body's natural aging process termed as senescence. Quite obviously therefore, your first line of defense against skin damage and aging are sunscreen for face and body. Other than that, there are also clinic-based procedures, like Cosmelan, that give you maximum benefits with minimal downtime.
Before you consider procedures though, there are five ingredients you should be looking for in your skincare products, listed below:
1. Vitamin C.This is one ingredient that any type of skin should benefit from. Other than being a powerful antioxidant, Vitamin C also helps firm up your skin and improves your skin's resistance to sagging and wrinkling. It has natural astringent properties that brighten your overall complexion, lighten dark spots and improve the appearance of uneven skin tone. Vitamin C also powers up the cells so that skin is revitalized and efficiency in repair and regeneration are restored.
2. Vitamin E.Boost the protective function of sunscreen for face and of your Vitamin C with the addition of Vitamin E. It has natural skin moisturizing properties that soothe your skin of irritations. It also acts as a powerful antioxidant.
3. Niacinamide. Unlike Vitamins C and E, this Vitamin, also known as Vitamin B3, is only beginning to make a name in anti-aging care. Many studies, however, have already shown that this ingredient is the ultimate multi-tasker. It helps revitalize cellular energy, powering up skin cells to keep churning out skin precursors like collagen. It also helps restructure the skin's outer protective barriers, brighten dark spots and prevent inflammation.
4. Plant oils. High in antioxidants and rich in fatty acids, these ingredients derived from essential oils also tend to closely resemble the structure of your skin matrix. Essential oils, such as almond oil, sunflower oil and safflower oil, have natural moisturizing properties and are able to penetrate skin easily and deeply. These ingredients are easily taken up by the skin to support its many functions, most notably, repair and rejuvenation. Just make sure than when you do use plant oils, use only cosmetic grade and fragrance-free.
5.Alpha hydroxy acids. Whether found in your facial cleanser or in your night cream, AHAs can give you a naturally smoother and brighter complexion that is comparable to your Cosmelan procedure. AHAs, often found in the labels as glycolic acid, citric acid or lactic acid, clears your skin of dead skin cells, excess oils, makeup residue, dirt and other impurities trapped in your pores and sitting on the surface of your skin. AHAs soften the debris, sloughs it off then, eliminates it from your skin. The light clearing action does not leave your skin scratched nor wounded which makes these ingredients a wonderful group of exfoliants.
Stop confusing yourself. When it comes to what works on aging skin, you only have to look at the evidence and mute the product advertising to allow yourself to think. Turn to the labels and look for these ingredients to be sure you're getting only what your skin needs. Take into consideration your skin type and your most pressing skin issues as well. However, keep in mind that picking up the right cream with the right ingredients is just a start. Major changes in your lifestyle may have to be undertaken as well.
