If you are in need of new window treatments for your home, we understand your desire to make the right selection. After all, new blinds often represent a considerable investment and we would hate for your hard earned money to be wasted. If you have done your research and it's come down to a choice between pleated and cellular blinds, you've come to the right place; in this article, we have outlined some of the fundamental differences between the two.

Pleated Blinds

As their name suggests, these blinds have pleats that fold up beneath each other when you want to open them.

  • Privacy – In these shades, a cord runs vertically through each of the pleats; typically, there is a cord every 24 to 36 inches. When the covering is in the down position, the cord holes reduce the overall privacy of the treatment. Blackout fabrics may provide some benefit.

  • Insulation – Pleated blinds generally provide an R-value (resistance to heat loss) of about 2.5. A reflective backing can be used to help the shade retain its relative heat-repelling and heat-conserving properties, but there will still be some heat gain during summer and loss during winter.

  • Price – These shades are usually the less expensive option, as they only contain a single layer of fabric. The lift system you have selected can also affect the price of the covering; be aware that some are not available across both types. The installation costs should be the same.

  • Safety – It is essential that you consider the safety of your children and pets when purchasing blinds. Even though the cords are exposed, when the shade is in the closed position they are locked into place and do not pose a choking hazard.

Cellular Blinds

As their name suggests, these blinds have cells that are filled with air and often used as a barrier.

  • Privacy – In these shades, the cords run up the inside of the cell; therefore, the carrier holes don't interfere with privacy when the covering is in the down position. To further improve your privacy, blackout fabrics can be used in the manufacture.

  • Insulation – Triple cellular blinds are known to provide an R-value of up to 7.18. Insulation must work in both directions – protecting against heat loss during cold weather and heath gain during hot weather. To further improve these capabilities, a reflective backing can be added.

  • Price – These shades are usually the more expensive option, as they involve two or more layers being bonded together. These multiple layers also mean that they are a heavier option. Your chosen lift system can also affect the cost of the blind, but installation costs should be the same.

  • Safety – Many people consider these coverings to be the safest for children and young pets, as the cords are concealed inside the cells (eliminating the choking risk). Even so, it is recommended that shade controls are located out of reach of children.

Whilst there are some fundamental differences between pleated and cellular blinds, it is important that you have carefully considered all of the above points when making a decision for your home. Remember that what suits one family may not suit another, as the choice comes down to particulars (such as budget and aesthetics). No matter which treatment you ultimately select, it is important that you buy through a reputable manufacturer.
