If you’re of the opinion that the Pirates franchise was sinking with each sequel, On Stranger Tides saves the day. Well, almost. It’s still a fun ride as the dishy Johnny Depp is as incorrigible as ever as Captain Jack Sparrow and Penelope Cruz is the phataka quotient of the film. A special mention goes to the Latino accent, which is such a huge turn on. The plot isn’t very convoluted, so if you suffer from sequel amnesia, you mercifully don’t need to disentangle the back stories of the characters. The film is not a patch on the original, of course, but we’ve learnt to discount that already. Johnny Depp’s gravity-defying entry has been staged energetically: the scallywag Sparrow poses as a judge for his own trial, is chased through the streets of London by the guards and wobbles on the roofs of horse carriages like a lithe but punch-drunk fairy.
